On the first day of this conference and on its sidelines, two specialized meetings were held on the topics of “Eastern Corridor of the communication route between Iran and the Indian Ocean” and “Review of infrastructure projects and infrastructures of the Eastern Corridor”.
Presenting the report and introduction of the Eastern Corridor and the Sarkhs Special Economic Zone, introducing the facilities and capacities of Chabahar Port and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Company, as well as the introduction of the Dogharon Special Economic Zone, were among the topics that were discussed and exchanged in this conference.
The role of the eastern corridor in the country’s economic investments
In this conference, the governor of Khorasan Razavi pointed out the importance of economic issues from the point of view of governance and government. Among the corridors of the north, south and east, the eastern part is especially important for various reasons, and focusing on it can help in the country’s economic plans and investments.
Yaqub Ali Nazari named Chabahar Port as the starting point in the Eastern Corridor and said: If we consider Chabahar as a water terminal with its accesses, this port will have a very good capacity in the eastern part.
He emphasized: As a port location, Chabahar has a good potential for activating the eastern corridor of the country. In fact, the connection of Chabahar port to the countries of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and from Turkmenistan to the countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Russia, shortens the route between these countries in terms of transportation and transit.
Nazari said that fortunately we are witnessing an increase in transportation capacity in Sarkhes region, adding: This can happen in Chabahar, Dogharon border points, etc.
Khorasan Governor Razavi continued: In the near future, we can start rail transportation in Chabahar, and at the same time, administrative bureaucracies including services, customs, and cargo handling capacities should be shortened along the way.
The need to accelerate the completion of Chabahar rail
Referring to the target set for completing the Chabahar-Zahedan rail and connecting it to the country’s rail, he said: In addition, the extension of this rail from Zahedan to South Khorasan, Sarkhes and Dogharon is on the agenda.
Nazari continued: If we can create both road and rail sections in these routes, we will achieve the shortest and most economical route, which is undoubtedly favored by the countries located in this corridor.
Stating that the two free zones of Dogharon and Sarkhes have very good capacity, he added: 75% of the country’s rail transit takes place from Sarkhes and there has been good foreign investment in this region.
The growing trend of economic flow in Razavi Khorasan
Nazari announced a 26% increase in the export of the province this year compared to last year and stated: The economic flow in Razavi Khorasan has gone through a positive trend during the last 11 months.
He continued: Razavi Khorasan Province, in coordination with other provinces, announces its readiness to help launch the road and rail sections of the Eastern Corridor, a happy event that will greatly help the country’s economy.
